Getting Over Your Fear Of Dogs

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Meet Olly the Cavalier King Charles puppy – isn’t he cute? He dropped in with his owner to pick up some supplies for his new home.

Amazingly, his new owner (that’s the lady cuddling him in her arms adoringly) was terrified of dogs before he arrived. A friend convinced her to try starting out with a puppy and while she still feels a little nervous of strange dogs, Olly has pretty much cured her fear. As the lady herself said “how could anyone be afraid of him?” :)

In my experience meeting people who have a fear of dogs, it seems to usually stem from an incident during childhood – maybe a nip from a dog or even just from having to walk past the big dog at the top of the road that seemed so scary to a little person. Either that or simply due to a lack of contact with dogs, people develop a fear of them. Like anything, the longer you leave it simmer the more the fear escalates.

Take my completely irrational fear of going to the dentist – I can’t explain it but can’t get over it either. The only way I will get over it is to go, and have a good experience and realise its actually not that bad. A very nice lady from the local dental clinic shops in our Dun Laoghaire store, her clinic really does sound lovely and I’m slowly building myself up to picking up the phone for an appointment ;)

If you have a fear of dogs and would like some help overcoming it, therapy can be very helpful.
Katie Jane from the Paul Goldin Clinic shops in our store and tells us her (beautiful!) dogs help people overcome their fear of dogs in the clinic all the time.

Alternatively, if you have a dog who is fearful – our all natural Sleepy Time Tonic works wonders for stressful situations.

Spike Dog Collars – not just for tough guys!

Friday, February 19th, 2010

We’ve always been fans of unusual collars here at Mollys. We had some requests for spike collars, but when ordering the traditional leather spike dog collars (now available in tiny to XL sizes, starting at €12.99) we couldn’t resist picking up some new twists on an old favorite too :)

Collar-wise, there’s very little more badass looking than a 2″ wide, handcrafted leather spike dog collar in classic black or burgundy, we simply had to have some!

We then took it a step further with the pink and baby blue versions. Apart from the fact that they’re gorgeous, a lot of our customers with breeds that have an (undeserved) bad name tell us that collars and accessories in cute colours help their pet get a much better reaction from people in the street.

For smaller dogs that want a rock n roll look, our Pyramid and Spike Collars are ideal. They are available to fit from 7″ necks and up in several funky patterns, colours and finishes. The best part is they’re only €14.99 each, so if you can’t pick a favorite you can collect them all :)

Dogs health in the Cold Conditions

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Some pets are better suited than others for these weather conditions were having at the moment, there is a common misconception that dogs will be fine outside. Just like us humans dogs can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite. A below zero temperature is too cold for any house pet.

Puppies and the senior pets are especially at risk. At this time of year many new christmas puppies are being house trained and a common mistake is to assume that they need to be brought outside, during the icy conditions paper training is best and once the extreme cold period passes you can later move the paper outside.

Dog Clothes

Get a Warm Dog Jacket and ensure that they wear it when going out for walks. When out walking in snow, dogs may get large ice balls between their pads, causing the dog to limp and be uncomfortable. Be sure to keep ice clear from this area. For dogs that have a lot of hair between the pads, keeping it clipped shorter will help with ice ball formation. Dog boots offer protection to those dogs that will tolerate wearing them.
Pets walked on paths that have been de-iced with salts are prone to dry, chapped, and potentially painful paws. This will encourage the pet to lick their paws, and ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation and upset. Wash off your pet’s feet after an outing with a warm wet rag.

Lastly remember that water bowls too freeze in the cold weather. Its essential that your pets have access to water at all times.

Meet Missy, the adorable 12 week old mini yorkie puppy!

Her mum and dad picked her up yesterday and today she came down to shop for a new collar, ID tag, toys and a dress.

She may be tiny, but she knows how to do damage with her mum’s card already! :-)

Welcome along Missy from all the Mollys crew!
